What in the Hell is Going On?
Michael “Brownie”Brown, Donald “Rummie” Rumsfeld, Lewis “Scooter” Libby Jr., Jack Abramoff, Tom “The Hammer” DeLay, Ken “Kenny Boy” Lay and now Alberto “Gonzo” Gonzales. All unquestioning supporters of our President, and his agenda. All unquestioningly supported by that same President. All surrounded by controversy.
Watching Alberto Gonzales testify I couldn’t help wondering, “What in the hell is going on?” It’s like deja-vu all over again.
On dozens of occasions Alberto Gonzales claimed, “I can’t recall” or “I don’t remember” when asked about his involvement and/or knowledge of the firings of eight U.S. Attorneys. He “can’t recall”? He “doesn’t remember”? Does this seem familiar to anyone? To those old enough it should. “I can’t recall” were Ronald Reagan’s famous words when he testified in front of Congress in connection to the Iran-Contra scandal. Since that point on, “I can’t recall”, “I’m not sure I was stone cold drunk that day”, and “What do you mean by ‘is’?” have become standard responses for Politicians and Government Officials when questioned under oath.
Now, I understand not being able to remember. There are entire weeks from my youth that are completely blank. However, I don’t run The Department of Justice nor am I the President of the United States. Personally, I expect a little more from them than I do a teenager who just got a half ounce of some kick ass Hawaiian. After all, isn’t memory a fairly important quality to have if you are the head of Federal Law Enforcement?
But this is how it is today isn’t it? Politicians play dumb and in the process treat us like we’re stupid. And you know what? Maybe we are. I’ve heard many from the Right dismiss the firings as “nonsense” and more directly “bullshit”. Apparently they got hold of some of that Maui Waui because only someone who is stoned fails to see the danger in allowing the Department of Justice to involve itself in Partisan Politics.
If any of the accusations are true then that means the Department of Justice was potentially involved in trying to influence elections. Hey, no big deal as long as your party comes out on top right? But the problem transcends the now. If we’ve learned anything about Politicians is that once we allow the envelope to be pushed the next guy/gal will try to push it even further. Kids will get away with what the parent allows them to get away with. And that’s the crux of the matter.
George Bush has surrounded himself with people who are either total incompetents or common criminals with no regard for laws, rules, ethics or morality. Of course you hear the Right wing crybabies screech that once again this is nothing but another “liberal witch-hunt”. Well, I’m one who believes if everyone around you is accused of being a “witch” then maybe just maybe there is a “witch” on the loose. Especially when several of the “witches” are convicted of criminal acts or forced to resign. Are we supposed to believe it’s only coincidence?
Maybe in the end we get what we deserve. Americans stood by and watched Reps butcher Clinton because he lied about getting a blowjob. Clinton is a scumbag, you’ll get no disagreement from me on that. But if he’s a scumbag, what about our Frat Boy in Chief? How much longer are Americans, all Americans, going to stand around with their thumbs up their butts? When a Politician gets away with lying, manipulating, committing a crime etc he isn’t just hurting the other party. He is hurting everyone.
Can someone please tell me when intelligence became a “Partisan” issue?
